Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 May 2026
Decompress is designed as a private, local-first reflection app. Your reflections (spoken or typed) never leave your device. The app does not run a backend, does not create a cloud account, and does not send reflection content to OpenAI, Apple cloud services, or any third-party AI service.
Data Stored On Device
Decompress stores the following data locally on your device:
- reflection transcripts
- reflection dates and context, such as Work or Personal
- before/after stress ratings
- local summaries and pattern rollups
- reminder preferences
- your preferred first name, if you choose to enter one
This information is held in the app’s local SwiftData store and is accessible only to Decompress on this device. Decompress does not have a copy of it.
Audio
Decompress uses the microphone to transcribe a spoken reflection. The app does not write or retain audio files. The microphone stream is used for live transcription and then discarded.
Speech Recognition
Decompress uses Apple’s Speech framework and requires on-device speech recognition. If on-device recognition is not available on your device, you can type the reflection instead.
On-Device Summaries
Local summaries are computed on your device using deterministic rules. On iPhones that support Apple Intelligence (currently iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 and 17 family devices), Decompress can use Apple’s on-device Foundation Models framework to improve the receipt wording. This still runs locally and your reflection text does not leave the device.
Notifications
Decompress can schedule local reminders for work shutdown and personal check-ins. These are local notifications scheduled on your device. The app does not use server push notifications.
Advertising
The free version of Decompress shows a small banner advertisement on the Home and History screens, served by Google AdMob. The reflection journey itself is always ad-free. Ads do not appear during or immediately after a reflection, and Decompress does not share your reflection content, stress ratings, transcripts, or summaries with any advertising service.
We do not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission, which means the app cannot use Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA) to track you across other apps and websites. Ads are non-personalised contextual ads served through SKAdNetwork. Attribution events tell advertisers that an install or ad-conversion happened, without identifying you.
The AdMob SDK collects the following data from the device to serve and measure ads:
- IDFA (only if you have separately granted tracking permission for other apps) or the device’s IDFV identifier
- coarse, IP-derived approximate location
- ad impression and ad-click interaction events
- crash and performance diagnostics
This is collected by Google’s SDK, not by Decompress, and is governed by Google’s privacy policy at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Google publishes how its ad services work at policies.google.com/privacy.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, Decompress shows a consent form from Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) the first time the app opens, before any ad is requested. You can revisit your choices any time from Settings → Privacy → Ad privacy options.
You can permanently remove ads by purchasing Ad-Free Forever. This disables the AdMob banner and prevents further ad requests on this device.
In-App Purchases
Decompress offers one optional in-app purchase:
- Ad-Free Forever (one-time, non-consumable): permanently removes the banner ad on your Apple ID.
Purchases are processed by Apple. Decompress does not see your payment details. You can restore your Ad-Free purchase on any device signed in to the same Apple ID from Settings > Remove ads > Restore purchases.
Export And Deletion
You can export your reflections as a JSON file from Settings > Clean Sweep, and you can also delete all saved reflections from this device. Deletion is immediate and permanent on this device.
Children
Decompress is intended for users aged 9 and over and is not directed at children under 13. Decompress does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If the app’s data handling changes.. for example if a future release adds analytics, crash reporting, cloud sync, or remote AI processing. This policy and the App Store privacy details will be updated before that release.
